Exhibit Open: October 3-31, 2011 (Mon., Wed., Fri., 11:00 am - 4:00 pm) For 11 years Fanfare has partnered with the International House of Blues Foundation (IHOBF) to sponsor an art competition for area school children. Using "found" or recycled materials to create their artwork, young artists are inspired to depict significant events that have shaped their lives and world. Participants will also have the opportunity to experience the IHOBF's "Cultural Journeys" program during the month long celebration at the Columbia Theatre. Date: Friday, October 14, 2011 Your students are in store for much more than a story this year! Dr. Jayetta Slawson is an Associate Professor and Drama Specialist for the Department of English at Southeastern Louisiana University where she teaches Modern and Contemporary Drama, Shakespeare, Creative Writing: Drama and Studies in Performance. She will speak to students about the process of adapting literary characters into storytelling pieces. Then, she will perform/tell her original monologue/story of Dame Van Winkle adapted both from Rip Van Winkle, the well-known story of Washington Irving, and from the play Rip Van Winkle written and performed by Joseph Jefferson. Finally, she will lead the students in a writing exercise in which they will have the opportunity to write a short tale based on a famous literary character. As time permits, she will let two or three students read/perform their stories. Dr. Slawson will visit three schools. Students should bring pencils and paper to the presentation. There is no limit on attendance. COST:
Date: Tuesday, October 18, 2011 Duo Montagnard is a guitar and saxophone duo that has performed across the U.S., Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Thailand, Slovenia, Greece, Denmark and the United Kingdom. And now, this well-traveled duo, Joseph Murray and Matthew Slotkin, is coming to one local school to perform for students and discuss their instruments and music. It's a fantastic way to learn! Slotkin is an acclaimed performer, teacher and scholar. He directs the guitar programs at Mansfield University and Bloomsburg University in Pennsylvania. He has achieved success in solo performance, chamber music and as a soloist with orchestra. Joseph Murray has been the saxophone professor at Mansfield University of Pennsylvania since 1987, where he has also served as Department Chair and Director of Bands. He has also been involved in commissioning and premiering more than twenty new works for the saxophone. The duo prefers a class size between 20 and 200. Dates: Wednesday, October 19, 2011 Join Southeastern Louisiana University's Wind Symphony in a fun and exciting program, exploring the music of all woodwind, brass and percussion instruments. The Symphony is directed by Dr. Glen J. Hemberger who is also the Director of Bands and an Associate Professor of Music at Southeastern. He has appeared throughout the United States, Europe, Scandinavia, Asia and Australia as a clinician, conductor and lecturer. For this performance, Dr. Hemberger will also be joined by a special guest, legendary Canadian bassoonist Richard Hoenich. COST:
Tree Viewing: Beginning November 18, 2011 (Mon., Wed. Fri., 11:00 am - 4:00 pm) Celebrate the holiday season by helping decorate Columbia's Tree! Once again, our theme is "The Gift of the Arts," and we are commissioning area students to create ornaments featuring any element of the arts. The guidelines are included with this event offering list. Additionally, students who create an ornament may choose to be entered into a drawing to win four tickets to a public performance of Hammond Ballet Company's The Nutcracker on Friday, December 9 or Saturday, December 10, courtesy of the Columbia Theatre. The guidelines for the tree trimming are included with this event list. COST:
Date: Friday, December 9, 2011 The Hammond Ballet Company will bring a bit of magic to the holidays with "The Nutcracker." This glittering classic ballet tells the tale of a young girl named Clara and one very unusual Christmas dream. Among those making appearances in her colorful and exciting dream are the Nutcracker Prince, the Rat King, the Snow Queen, snowflakes, soldiers and the Sugar Plum Fairy. There's something for everyone in this much-loved holiday tradition at the Columbia Theatre, and Hammond Ballet Company's young, local dancers are sure to pirouette into your heart as they are led by featured professional ballet dancers from around the country. Date: TBD (Available year-round by appointment) Go behind-the-scenes of the Columbia Theatre for the Performing Arts (circa 1928) and learn about its rich history on a guided tour. The vintage theatre, once regarded as the "jewel in the crown" of Hammond's downtown, was rescued from decades of neglect and restored to its former grandeur and elegance, reopening in January 2002.
