“Alexander von Humboldt and the Latin American Journey That Changed
the Way We See the World”
The former editor of several major New York publishing houses and author of Humboldt’s Cosmos will discuss explorer and scientist Alexander von Humboldt (1769-1859), whose discoveries influenced the work of Charles Darwin and other scientists in a variety of disciplines. Humboldt helped lay the foundations for modern scientific method, and his epic journey through Latin America in 1799-1804 made him a real-life, early nineteenth century “Indiana Jones.” Book signing to follow.

Michael Krueger: Full Metal Journals
These series of drawings and prints by Michael Krueger were created from high school journals, tardy slips, notebook pages and scrapbooks, which the artist found preserved in his mother’s attic. The journal pages capture an adolescent energy and place. The artwork focuses on a time in life, which is largely ignored in contemporary art.

Susan Johnson: Paintings, Drawings and Prints
Susan Johnson creates artwork composed of images that one might see in a natural history museum, but that have been altered and combined with other images taken from pop culture to create ironic paintings, drawings and prints.
Art and the Word
Faculty members from the English Department and the Department of Visual Arts have teamed up to create new collaborative works, resulting in this exhibition. The artwork and written pieces will be displayed together in an exhibition that explores the relationships between the written word and the visual arts. Lectures and poetry readings will take place at the opening reception and at scheduled times below.

Columbia Theatre
Legendary Louisiana native Doug Kershaw, known affectionately as the “Ragin’ Cajun” gives a powerful live performance featuring an energetic, swirling mix of rock, blues, jazz, country and, of course, Cajun music. One of the planet’s world-renowned fiddle players, Kersaw takes his audience on a hyper kinetic joyride through a multitude of musical styles, some decades old, others more contemporary. His catalog of over 30 albums is a testament to his longevity as both a recording artist and a performer, and many of his peers consider him the best musician, singer, songwriter and performer to ever come out of Southwest Louisiana.
