“Delaying the Dream: Southern Senators and the Fight Against Civil Rights, 1938-1965”
Historian Keith Finley will discuss his new book in which he explores gradations in the opposition to racial equality by examining how the South's national spokesmen—its United States senators—addressed the civil rights question and developed a concerted plan to thwart civil rights advances. While many historical accounts of the era focus on the ferocity of white resistance, Finley points out that adversaries also employed less confrontational tactics to deny equal rights to black Americans. “Delaying the Dream” highlights the colorful characters and ferocious battles that culminated in the most far-reaching legislation ever passed by Congress.
