Search for New High School Playwrights

The Columbia Theatre for the Performing Arts in Hammond, Louisiana, is proud to sponsor a playwriting contest for area high school playwrights in Tangipahoa, Washington, Livingston, St. Tammany, and Ascension Parishes.

When:  We will begin accepting submissions via email on May 15, 2020. The last day to submit will be July 31, 2020.

What:  We are looking for one-act plays 30-40 pages in length.

  • The title of your play must be Love in the Age of Corona with a subtitle of your choosing.  
  • The setting of the play must be sheltering in Tangipahoa, Washington, Livingston, St. Tammany, or Ascension Parish.  
  • The theme of your play must deal with Love in the Age of Corona using or more of the following Greek definitions of love:
    • Storge – empathy bond
    • Philios – friend bond
    • Eros – romantic love
    • Agape – unconditional “God” love
  • The play must have a minimum of five characters.
  • The play can be comedy, drama, or anything in between.
  • If there is any violence in the play, it must take place off stage.
  • Please avoid including presidential politics in the play.
  • Please avoid using supernatural entities in your play (no zombies, superheroes, vampires, or parts that would be played by Gal Gadot or one of the Hemsworths).
  • Characters can be any age.

  • All submissions must be sent as pdfs to james.winter@selu.edu before June 16, 2020 in order to be considered.

Two winning scripts will be selected to have staged readings at the Columbia Theatre on the evening of October 23rd.  The readings will be directed by Mark Leonard and Jim Winter.  Each winning playwright will also receive a $500.00 cash prize provided through the generosity of the contest’s creator, Mark Leonard.
